What do Hope and Truth Have in Common?

Truth and Hope

What do hope and truth have in common? I believe several things. First, discovering the truth and realizing our hopes are both fundamental, motivating forces for almost every human. Each of us will decide what truth is for ourselves; which will, in turn, help form our hopes. The Psalmist indicated there was a relationship between his hopes and what he believed to be the truth when he said, “Never take your word of truth from my mouth, for I have put my hope in your laws” (Psalm 119:43). His hopes were born from and based on the truth. As a practical matter, it makes perfect sense. It would seem to be an exercise in futility to base our hope on something which we don’t believe to be true.

We at Hope Through the Truth  believe hope and truth are inextricably intertwined for a second reason. Both originate from a single source, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus perfectly exemplified God’s Word, the truth, by his every word and deed. Jesus Christ was and is the Word of God (John 1:1), the truth. Just as the work of Jesus could not be separated from the will of God the Father (John 4:34); it is only through the resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ from the dead that we, who believe in Him, have been given a new birth into a living hope (1 Peter 1:3).

An Earthly Example of Hope Based on Truth

My brothers, sister, and myself were fortunate to be raised in a home with parents who loved us very much. After we became adults and our parents grew older, they told us that one day, when they were gone, we, their children, would inherit whatever they owned; to be shared equally among us. Over the decades, Mom and Dad had proven their word to be true and their love to be steadfast, time and time again. We had every reason to believe our parents would deliver on their promise; it was only a matter of when. After Mom and then Dad died, we inherited everything they had, just as they said.

God Almighty wants to be our heavenly Father. His desire is for everyone to be his adopted child (2 Peter 3:9). Scripture tells us:

  • See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God (1 John 3:1).
  • Jesus said, “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life” (Matthew 19:29).

If we accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, God has promised to adopt us as his heir and we will have eternal life with him one day. It is the desire of God’s heart that everyone accept his offer. Yet, he will not force anyone to make that decision.

Only You Can Decide

It is not our place, at Hope Through the Truth, to tell you what to believe or on what you set your hopes.  We are prepared to share two things with you; what we believe and why we believe it.   Jesus’s claim regarding this topic is unequivocal. Jesus said, “I am the truth” (John 14:6). The truth is singular. Jesus did not say He was one of many truths. Bob and Sue, dear friends of mine, gave me a plaque that read, “God said it. I believe it. That settles it.” Those who believe in the Bible as the one eternal truth, this saying could be shortened to read, “God said it. That settles it.” At Hope Through the Truth, we have found what we believe to be the truth. Our hope is, as you search for truth, you will find it as well.
