A Moment With God
Devotional time with God is the calm eye of the storm in our hectic daily lives. It gives us a vital respite; a quiet, peaceful time of contemplation and thanks-giving for the many blessings we receive from our heavenly Father; but sometimes take for granted. This brief period allows us to focus on eternal matters as we worship our Creator; a time of reflection and devotion, not on what is important or urgent in this world, but on the eternal. It is an all-important opportunity to relish a moment with God.
Scripture says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10).
A Worldly Definition of Provision
Our daily lives are a whirlwind of activity; stuffed with agendas, multiple tasks, and short deadlines as we endeavor to earn a living to provide for ourselves and families. The corporate world will monopolize every moment of our lives, if we allow it. The marketing world will try to convince us we need a larger house, newer car, better clothes to impress the business world, and more luxurious vacations to keep the family happy. Providing the physical necessities of life; food, shelter, and clothing; is a basic duty of the provisionary. Providing the necessities of life for your family is commanded by God.
The Bible says, “Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (1 Timothy 5:8).
Redefining Provision
In our culture when we think of provision, we picture clothes on our backs, food on the table, and a roof over our heads. We tend to focus exclusively on houses, cars, bank accounts, stock portfolios, and amassing “stuff.” Yet, there is so much more to provision that this. “Pro” means “before” or “ahead of time.” Vision means “sight” or “seeing.” When you combine the two, it means looking ahead, anticipating needs, defining the destination.
If providing the basic necessities is all “provision” means to us; we’ve left out the most important part. We are focused on worldly things, when in fact it is the eternal spiritual world which should be at the forefront. Matters of character, faith, integrity, and justice – the kind of things that last. These are the character traits of a provisionary that outlive the individual and leave a legacy.
Devotionals will help to keep us focused on the most important eternal, spiritual matters as we endeavor to provide the basic necessities in our temporal life.
