Depending upon who you ask, you may get a wide variety of answers to the question, “What is the truth?” The Bible tells us four persons or things are truth. They are God the Father, the Holy Spirit of God, Jesus Christ the Son of God, and the Word of God. Does this mean there is more than one eternal truth? No! God’s Word, the Bible, was given to mankind at God’s direction through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ embodied God’s Word without sin while walking this earth. These four, in perfect harmony, flawlessly represent The One Eternal Truth to us.
But, “What is the one eternal truth they convey regarding mankind’s eternal destination?” you may ask. The soul of each human being ever conceived will exist forever; either with God the Father, His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit in eternal joy; or separated from God in eternal torment. Then you may ask, “How do I get to eternity with God the Father?” That question will be addressed in another study.
God is Truth
They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are (Matthew 22:16).
Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him (John 7:28).
For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed (Romans 15:8).
We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life (1 John 5:20).
Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long (Psalm 25:5).
Never take your word of truth from my mouth, for I have put my hope in your laws (Psalm 119:43).
The Holy Spirit Is Truth
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you (John 14:16–17).
“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father – the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father – he will testify about me (John 15:26).
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come (John 16:13).
This is the one who came by water and blood – Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth (1 John 5:6).
Jesus Christ is Truth
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:1, 14).
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ (John 1:17).
When you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus (Ephesians 4:21).
As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine (2 Corinthians 11:10).
I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit (Romans 9:1).
“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me (John 18:37).
The Word of God is Truth
Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth (John 17:17).
He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created (James 1:18).
In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food (Hebrews 5:12).
For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does (Psalm 33:4).
All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal (Psalm 119:160).
Why the Truth Matters
Why should the truth matter to each of us? Because it will save us.
But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as first-fruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:13).
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13).
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).
